Where Is Your Treasure?

Read: Matthew 6: 19-34

"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (V: 21) We cannot store up treasures on earth as well as in heaven. We cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in). (V: 24).

Our focus should be on what has eternal value. The things we accumulate here on earth are not lasting and we cannot take it with us.

We shouldn't concern ourselves with what we need or want. God will always provide for our daily needs - "Give us this day our daily bread." (V: 11). That's easier said than done when you're struggling to provide the basic essentials. It can be a really anxious time. Especially when bills are mounting up, and there isn't any money to pay them. But I'll tell you what, focusing on the 'Kingdom of God' as our priority, some how, some way, all these other things are taken care of. God does provide! As V: 33 says, "But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides."

So often though, our focus is on what we have, or rather what we do not have, and what we want to get. We should rather be focusing on what has eternal value. Is what we want to have going to further the work that God has for us to do in the Kingdom of God, or is it for our comfort and pleasure here on earth? May we desire to be looking beyond the 'temporal' that is on earth, to the 'eternal' that is in Heaven.

So, where is your treasure?

Here are a couple of poems you may like to read regarding the topic in this Devotional.

If then you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
Colossians 3: 1-2

Lord, help me store treasures above
Where it will never decay
Neither shall moth or rust destroy
Nor its value ever fade.
